This retrofit project is funded by Busselton Water and the Australian Government’s National Water Security Plan for Cities and Towns program, under the Water for the Future initiative.

The RF project was recognized in 2009 in the WA Sustainable Cities Awards for its contribution to water conservation. In 2010 the project was also a finalist in the WA Australian Water Association Awards in the category of Water Infrastructure Innovation and semi-finalist in the Regional Achievement Awards in the category of water conservation.

Reading Water Meters

By reading your meter regularly you can budget for your water consumption accounts as well as monitoring your consumption patterns, especially if your garden reticulation is connected to mains water supply. Busselton Water requires that all installed water meters shall be accessible to Busselton Water employees and contractors at all times by ensuring that an area one square metre around the meter be kept clear of all obstructions (including gardens, shrubs, trees).

The cost of your water consumption is gauged by the registration of water passing through your water meter. Although your meter is read every four months, it's is handy for you to keep a check on how much water you are using so that any unusual readings will be noticed quickly. This may happen if your internal pipes develop a leak, causing loss of water.

When looking at the dial of your meter you will see the main digital register. The first four digits are white on a black background (these are whole kilolitres) and the other numbers will be white on a red background (these are litres). You are only charged for the number of whole kilolitres you use.

When reading your meter, read only the black & white numbers. For your information a kilolitre is made up of 1,000 litres, takes up 1 cubic meter of space & weighs 1 tonne. The annual consumption for residential properties is about 284 kilolitres (2010/11).

To figure out your water usage, follow these easy steps:

  • Read only the black numbers.
  • Calculate your consumption by deducting current reading from your previous reading.
  • Divide the consumption by the number of days to calculate your daily water consumption. (Busselton Water accounts are over a 4-month period).

If you require any further assistance or have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact Busselton Water on (08) 9781 0500.

Meter Reading And Testing

All meters are read three times per year, each October, February and June. Facilities are available for customers to keep tally of progressive consumption during the year.  Meter tests are undertaken as requested by constituents on payment of the prescribed fee.
